The prestigious Poseidon Stakes race underwent at the Flemington racecourse. The 1100-meter race attracts talented horses from all over the place. Trainers leave no stone unturned in the preparation 0f the much-hyped and high-valued stakes. This year, the race saw a tough competition but had a surprise winner.

In equestrian sports, trainers have a special place as they are the ones who understand the horse and make them train according to their needs. This year the winner was Archo Nacho. For the winner of the 2023 Poseidon Stakes, the trainers’s bold moves and trust in him contributed to the victory.

Equestrian trainer’s timely decision

The Poseidon Stakes race at the Flemington racecourse had remarkable contenders in the beginning. The three-year-old gelding, Archo Nacho trained by famed Matt Laurie was also participating. It was destiny that brought Archo Nacho to the stakes. The gelding is owned by the trainer’s family and he was about to sell it to Hong Kong. The Mornington-based trainer and his partner Kelly decided at the last moment not to proceed with the sale. According to him, “We just thought there was more in store for this horse, and clearly there is“. That trust and timely decision paid off in this race.

The son of Sioux City was ridden by Ben Melham at the race and showed a furious performance, especially in the final stages. The gelding continued its pace and never let his competitors reach near him. He completed the race in 1:03.89. I AM Unstoppable came second and King’s Gambit secured the third position. This was the gelding’s most vital win of his career. Matt Laurie is happy with the win as the horse was brought for AUD 10,000 by his family when he was a weanling.

Speaking on the purchase he said, “I happened to pass this guy at the weanling sales and thought ‘Why not?’” The trainer’s kids and family are excited by the win and now the next race for the three-year-old is the Danehill Stakes in October and the Coolmore Stakes in November. The jockey Ben Melham is also happy with the horse’s performance and shows his contentment with him.

Ben Melham is indeed a happy man after the race. His efforts didn’t go to waste and the horses responded to his call when needed. Speaking on the three-year-old gelding Melham said, “He’s just doing it on raw ability; he’s got a good will to win and a good engine, but he’s not the finished product“.

The jockey has high regard for Archo Nacho and thinks that he deserved to win his last race at Flemington where in secured second place. He thinks that such a win at good tracks is beneficial for the horse and acknowledges that there is still much room for improvement in him, which will happen in the future.

Archo Nacho’s win at Flemington is a reward for his trainer Matt Laurie who trusted his instincts and didn’t sell him to Hong Kong. He kept faith in the horse’s ability to produce a stellar performence and he delivered it at the Poseidon Stakes race.
