Having received guidance from several trainers like Mike Maker and Brad Cox, Ferrin Peterson is showing tremendous growth. Donning her racing gear for a very short time, she has already made a lot of major equestrian heads turn. She is enjoying the attention of several jockeys who have made it to the Hall of Fame, like Julie Krone, Ramon Dominguez, and Cauthen. Peterson was initially engaged in jumping and dressage. However, she was more interested in forming a bond with her horse than competing.
Her only exposure to racing was an annual viewing of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on TV. However, this was enough to steer the heart of Ferrin Peterson to racing. Speaking about Peterson, Maker said, “She rides a smart race and always puts the horse in a position to win. She’s also a very hard worker who has great passion for the sport.” Maker said that Peterson is an excellent gate rider. The horses under the care of Peterson feel her genuine care. In fact, her connection can make even the horses in the rough shine.

Working with horses to win races
Ferrin Peterson carries her magical influence and transfers it to her horses. Brad Cox decided to pair a three-year-old filly with Peterson after seeing that the horse couldn’t perform well under other riders. This was the first time Peterson raced for Cox. Peterson spoke about working with several trainers and always going places. She said, “I’ve always gone where there’s an open door, because I want the opportunity to ride.” However, she won the race with an out-of-form horse on her very first attempt. Moreover, she won the race with a margin of 2 ½ lengths. Peterson has previously worked as a veterinarian for horses and thus knows a lot about a horse’s potential and its care.

With endless curiosity and a willingness to work hard, Ferrin Peterson keeps moving forward. She’s aware that female jockeys are not taken very seriously by a lot of people, but she is up for the challenge. Addressing the issue, Peterson said, “I hear a fair amount of bias against women, but when you have to work harder for something, you appreciate it that much more.” She says that this bias makes each victory she scores more meaningful and all the chances she receives more valuable.
