Recently, an unfortunate event at the Warrnambool Carnival in Victoria shocked thousands of equestrian fans. A horse named Mighty Oasis had a nasty fall due to which it lost its rider Shaun Phelan. Riding on Decron Dunroe’s Steeplechase’s 3450m racetrack, Mighty Oasis, unfortunately, couldn’t complete the ride smoothly.

This incident which took place on the second day of the carnival, threatened Phelan’s chances in the Grand annual event on 4th May, Thursday. A newsfeed named Sydney Morning Herald gave all details of the accident.

Equestrian Shaun Phelan’s dangerous fall

While Shaun Phelan rode confidently initially, he experienced a terrible jolt in the final phase of the ride, Unluckily, Mighty Oasis fell, and Phelan fell on top of him. While the horse wasn’t fatally injured, Phelan was rushed to the nearest healthcare facility.

 

Though Phelan didn’t have any major injuries, scans were taken as a precaution, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. Since Phelan expressed that he was facing back pain, the healthcare facility treated him while checking Phelan’s vitals. This wasn’t the only incident that shocked fans at the Warrnambool Carnival. Two other deadly incidents at the carnival also made headlines.

Two untoward accidents put the authorities on high alert

Youl Dash for Cash who galloped confidently over the steeples at Decron Dunro BM120 Steeplechase, faced an unfortunate incident on the second day of the carnival. He was ridden by Richard O’Donoghue whose balance unluckily stumbled leading to a fall. Luckily, he did not sustain any serious injuries.

Prior to that, a deeply saddening incident took place with the racehorse St Arnicca. While attempting to jump over a fence in the Brierly Steeplechase, Arnicca fell and rider Tom Ryan crashed into the ground. While Ryan managed to survive the accident without injury, St Arnnica was seriously injured by the fall. The injury was so grave that the horse had to be euthanized by the veterinarian on the racing course.  This led to a strong public declaration by Racing Victoria which issued a statement, “The racing incident has been referred to the jumps review panel to consider the circumstances and any potential safety enhancements.”
