Equestrian activities can be both exhilarating and risky. Statistics reveal that among young individuals engaged in horse activities, accidents are not uncommon. Bruises and abrasions are the most frequent injuries, with the head and face being the most vulnerable areas. With hospital admission rates surpassing those of motorcycling, skiing, and football, equestrian pursuits demand our attention to safety protocols.
A recent incident near the Gila River serves as a reminder of the potential dangers involved. This unfortunate event highlights the need for caution and safety measures when participating in horse-related endeavors.

A group of horseback riders set out on June 10 near the peaceful Gila River, north of Safford, to find lost cattle. However, an unexpected incident occurred. While navigating through dense brush, one of the cowboys accidentally shot himself in the leg, Gila Herald reported. Startled by the sudden turn of events, the injured cowboy alerted his companions who quickly called for help. They transported him on a four-wheeler to a nearby location on N. Sochi Lane where he awaited paramedics.
The cowboy’s revolver had become tangled in the brush, causing it to fire when he freed it. Thankfully, the bullet passed through his leg without causing further harm. Once the paramedics arrived, they took him to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for additional treatment. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of caution and safety when participating in equestrian activities. A parallel example would be of news presenter Jacqueline Felgate, who was swiftly transported to the hospital in an equestrian-related injury.
