Comebacks in sports are one of the coolest things to watch. This is especially true when the player who has been out of active participation comes in and sweeps the victory. Living and breathing a similar story, this equestrian racehorse made a brilliant comeback after being out of action for over eight months. However, this racehorse snatched the victory away from its competition with the right training approach and the perfect combination of rest, recovery, and training.

One of Repole Stable’s finest fillies, Nest, has again proven its mettle. Returning to an equestrian racetrack after months, the four-year-old filly made an impressive comeback. Making the other horses bite the dust, Nest rightfully won the Grade 2 Shuvee race at Saratoga on 23rd July 2023.

Nest is blessed with one of the best trainers in the form of Todd Pletcher. Under his training, it returned and pocketed another $200,000 with the grade 2 victory. Winning the race by an impressive 2 ½ lengths, Nest made the equestrian community doubt if it was ever gone. One of the favorites for the race, Clairiere, was in top form with consecutive Grade 1 victories. However, Clairiere fell short of even posing a serious threat to the four-year-old filly. Speaking about beating the favorite of the race to Horse Racing Nation, Nest’s co-owner Mike Repole remarked, “She was the best older horse in the division. She’s probably second best now.”

Nest’s owners were confident in its ability to outspeed everyone at the race. Commenting further about Nest’s victory, Repole said, “They could have gone around two more times and she wasn’t going to be passed.” Behind their sheer confidence was the steely support of trainer Todd Pletcher who made the right calls weeks prior to the race that led to the grand victory.

The preparation for the long run

Pletcher was initially preparing Nest for a run at the Odgen Phipps race on 10th June 2023. However, he couldn’t go through with his plan as a fever and a lingering infection plagued his ace filly. Deciding not to rush his best horse and allow it enough time for a complete recovery, Pletcher saved the strength of Nest until now. Owner Repole said, “This is not going to be her best out of the year. This might be her worst. She’s going to get better.” He also said Nest didn’t give its hundred percent in the race and could go even faster.

Sporting a sparkling record, Nest has won eight out of the twelve races it has ever participated in. This has enabled it to shoot past the $2 million mark in a jiffy. Pletcher said that he has his eyes on long-term goals for Nest. He didn’t allow Nest to go all-out in the race as he knew it could win without going full-throttle. Pletcher conserved its energy with this move and will now target Grade 1 races with his champion filly.
