The Kentucky Derby that was held in the year 2014 witnessed a sea of 164, 906 fans. No doubt, many things got lost in the current, and some things were left behind intentionally. The mess made by the Derby fans that year was truly spectacular. According to a report by THV11, tradition dictates that students who wish to raise funds take on the responsibility of the cleanup after the Derby ends. The same happened that year, and the students were none too happy.

Allegra Schikler, who was a student of Atherton High School, said, “Negative amounts of fun. It’s so bad, I’m delirious.” Madison Williams, a DuPont Manual student added, “Everyone just throws all their bottles on the ground, there’s glass everywhere.” That year, the attendance was a record-forming one. The abundance of people ensured that a variety of left-behind items were strewn across Churchill Downs, each stranger than the next.

Schikler found a new way of sneaking in alcohol at the venue. She described the contraption, saying, “They’re like little tubes that you put alcohol in and they’re disguised as tampon holders.” The students also revealed that while the usual cleanup time was 3 hours, that year it ran much more than that. The typical items found in the mess were car keys, glasses, and cell phones. However, some really eccentric discoveries were also made during the cleanup.

Robert King, who was the then head of security of Churchill Downs, revealed that the lost and found that year included really strange items. King revealed, “We’ve had dentures turned into us.” A big-screen television is hardly something one would expect to find at horse races. But the 2014 Derby lost and found included that as well, and no one had any idea where that came from.

King also revealed that finding wallets chock full of cash, expensive jewelry, and other electronics was a common occurrence during cleanup. However, it is a testament to the honesty of people that they returned all the items, even the expensive ones, to the lost and found, so that they could be restored to their rightful owners. King appreciated the same, and said, “It really does restore your faith in people – that’s how they found it, that’s how they brought it in. That’s how we try to get it back to the rightful owners.”
