“Like No Other”: As Paris Olympics Approach, Equestrian Athletes Offer Insights From USOPC Training Experience

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee is the governing body for both the Olympic and Paralympic movements in the United States. It supports athletes by fielding teams for various games and providing extensive resources such as grants, training facilities, health services, and educational support. However, recently, they organized training for young emerging equestrians.

Four emerging athletes from the USEF/USDF program attended a rigorous four-day training camp at the USOPC. Ellanor Boehning, Tiggy Gates, Erin Nichols, and Christian Simonson, hailing from California, joined fellow U.S. athletes, focusing on physical training, nutrition, and the extensive support offered to national governing body program participants. When asked about their impression of the USOPC Training Center, their response was succinct and enthusiastic

Olympic and Paralympic pathways

In recent years, these emerging athletes have accomplished remarkable feats, reflecting on their experiences at the USOPC training camp and their aspirations as future U.S. athletes. Their responses were brimming with admiration and inspiration. Gates expressed, “ This was my second time visiting the USOPC training center. It is so inspiring to be around the top athletes and learn about what it takes to train and compete at a top level.”

Nichols conveyed a profound sense of inspiration and motivation derived from the USOPC Training Center. The pervasive presence of Team USA within the facility amplified his inner drive and pride in aspiring to compete for his country at the highest level of sports. Simonson added, “When I arrived at the USOPC facilities, I was really impressed. It was like no other training camp I had ever seen. The gym was one of my favorite parts, along with the swimming pool and gymnastics areas. Also, it was really incredible to see the extensive physical therapy and recovery areas.”

Inspirations at the USOPC training center

Following their immersive stint at the USOPC training camp, the emerging athletes conveyed sincere gratitude for the invaluable experience bestowed upon them. Boehning, expressing deep appreciation, credited USEF and the USOPC for investing in the progression of young dressage riders. Reflecting on the camp’s diverse educational sessions, Boehning commended Kristen Brett’s meticulous planning and organization, implementing key takeaways from the experience while expressing gratitude to all involved in making the camp a transformative opportunity.
