Jockey Maura Cedillo, astride Spectacular Road, was cruising forward when the mount stumbled on the track. With the stadium holding its breath out of anxiety, the unanticipated fall of the rider brought the moment to a halt. On May 1, the Guatemalan native suffered a hairline fracture in his shoulder after being thrown off by his mount.
Subsequently, people rushed Cedillo to Cleveland’s Metro Health Medical Center, as the fall triggered a cardiac arrest. Some good news emerged later, confirming that he had not undergone any permanent damage. Miraculously, he started getting better after living his days in the ICU, announcing an unforeseen comeback in the coming week.
He spoke to BloodHorse to announce, “I’m feeling good. I’m ready; I’m excited.” Cedillo has regained his long-desired back strength, staying under the care of uncle and trainer Jacinto Lopez. Long-term physiotherapy and diligent exercises have helped him dream again. With a return to working and galloping the horses in the morning, Maura has perfected his stances and balances.
He acknowledged God’s gift of life and stated, “I’m better and I’m stronger. God has given me this opportunity, and there are so many people to thank who helped me.”
