Monomoy Girl is one of the most decorated horses out there and probably has more felicitations than most humans. Though she has long retired, she is still in remembrance of fetching a hefty price at the Fasig-Tipton auction. According to a report by Daily Racing Form, the two-time Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner and Eclipse Award champion again set a record for thoroughbred sales by selling for $9.5 million to Spendthrift Farm.

The auction house reported a total of 142 horses being sold for a total of $80,237,000. In comparison, the previous year’s sale was for a total of $68,011,000 and 128 horses were sold therein. The auction’s average price per horse was $565,049. This was a 6% increase from the average price from last year, which was $531,336. The median was $200,000, dropping 33 percent from $300,000.

While there were several star-studded horses in the mix, Monomoy Girl topped the strata. She is a Tapizar mare and after the sale, Spendthrift planned to campaign for her in 2021. Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey said, “She’s a superstar, she’s an all-timer.” The then 5-year-old was tied for second all-time among racing or broodmare prospects sold at public auctions in North America. The auction was a huge success, and the same was expressed by Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning.

Star auction of the year

Browning credited the success of the auction to the portfolio of horses. There were three Eclipse Award champions and several other major winners. Not only that, but he also appreciated the owners who trusted Fasig-Tipton with their prized possessions. Browning said, “It’s a relationship-based business. It’s not just me, it’s, if you go through that office, on our sales team, every person involved in the organization has a key factor in recruiting some of these elite horses, and that’s why it works. . . .”

He also added, “There’s an awful lot of people who work hard on a year-round basis to recruit and to build the relationships with the people, because we care about them and we care about their horses.” While all horses fetched good prices, the top seven of the night were, in that order: Monomoy Girl, multiple Grade-1 winner Rushing Fall, M.V. Magnier, Midnight Bisou, Bast, Uni, She’s a Julie, and Got Stormy.
