Kirk’s routine swimming session at the Randwick racecourse horse pool turned fatal. During a routine swimming session in the pool, he panicked and swallowed lots of water. Though he was training under Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, his regular handler and foreman, no one had control over tragic incidents; the same happened with Kirk.
Kirk contested a 740 m barrier trial at Randwick and was in recovery mode in the horse pool at the club. Known for his promising career, King Kirk had just made headlines with a stunning debut in the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate. It was a proud moment for trainers and owners that Kirk won his debut race—the Group III ATC Breeders Plate winner.

Bookmakers had already listed King Kirk as a $15 favorite for the $5 million Golden Slipper the following year, indicating his early prominence. Being the son of Ole Kirk, a first-season stallion, he was regarded as an heir to a distinguished racing family.
