The late French architect and designer, Thierry Despont, etched his name in the annals of architectural history with his remarkable body of work. Before his untimely passing in August, Despont was posthumously honored with a coveted spot in Architectural Digest’s AD100 2023 Hall of Fame. His creative genius taste transcended borders, making him a celebrated figure across the globe.
Despont’s impressive portfolio included the meticulous restoration of the Statue of Liberty, the opulent interiors of the iconic 220 Central Park South super-tall tower, and private residences for industry titans and social luminaries like Bill Gates, Calvin Klein, and Annette and Oscar de la Renta. Over the span of three decades, he nurtured a unique rapport with Peggy and Mickey Drexler, adorning their homes with his distinct touch. Notably, he once undertook a renovation project for Leslie Wexner in Manhattan, which would later become the residence of Jeffrey Epstein.

While Despont’s portfolio shows a profound connection between client and architect, one project stands out as deeply personal – The Rosewood Farm Estate. Located in the Hamptons, this 34-acre property was transformed from its original identity as the Southampton Riding & Hunt Club into a private residential haven. Despont’s journey with the estate began through a series of acquisitions between 2011 and 2013, culminating in an investment of nearly $8.5 million. Under his discerning eye, the estate evolved into a tranquil, refined, and profoundly personal retreat.
The Rosewood Farm Estate is a big property. In the centre is a 5,500-square-foot house with six bedrooms. It used to be a barn but has been turned into a beautiful home now. This house has a lovely cobblestone patio with a fountain in the middle. There’s also another building with four bedrooms called the pool house and a barn that’s now an art studio and can hold four cars.
The person who designed this place, Despont, has a great sense of art. Every part of the main house, from the cozy living room with a fireplace to the study with wooden walls, is made with artistic care.

Despont’s artistic skills shine through in the estate. There’s a lovely lawn that connects the main house to the pool area. In the pool house, you’ll find a gym and a sauna. There’s also a delightful path that leads to a gazebo in a meadow nearby. This meadow is right next to a 50-acre agricultural area.

Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Paul Goldberger describes this place as ?a grand estate and a highly personal, intimate residence, where elegance and casualness are in perfect harmony.?The architecture and the landscaping are both understated yet deeply luxurious, and every room is a composition that shows Despont?s inventive and cultivated eye. The atmosphere throughout is what I can only call sumptuous restraint. It is like no other property I?ve seen in the Hamptons.?
