Limerick is home to one of the recognizable racecourses in the region; following the equestrian passion of the country. The city has hosted horse racing for centuries and still persists in welcoming the enthusiasts yearly. However, just as the sport stands no stranger to horse fatalities, Limerick wasn’t exempted from confronting a heart-wrenching accident; this time entailing horrifying details.

Horse fatalities aren’t exactly pretty things to witness. More specifically when involved in large vehicle accidents. The community at Limerick however had to spectate one such accident as a video about the situation surfaced on the internet. The content contained the authorities in action as they pulled the creature from its misery on the side street and away from the surrounding crowd.

The upsetting scenes in Limerick

On the 27th of October, a horse, speculated to be a young chestnut was lifted off the side street in the centre of the town. The authorities state that the horse was possibly being transferred in a horse box through Bruff, Limerick. However, it remains unknown how the equine was let loose from the container to end up in the situation. The horse further suffered grievous injuries that required a blanket to close up the adversities.

Upon arrival, the police had called for veterinary assistance but disappointingly, to no avail. The animal collection service was finally called upon who lifted the horse from the junction of Main Street and Crawford Street and into the lorry. “It was around 5 pm so the road was very busy. I’m not sure exactly what happened but it wasn’t a nice thing for people and especially youngsters to see. There was nothing anybody could do – it was just a freak thing,” one of the onlookers told Tipperary live.

Though the details were disturbing, the reports state that there was no further police investigation into the matter. However, previously, the authorities have made sure to impose restrictions on loose horses following an accident involving one.

The equestrian community receives impositions

A couple of years back, the 2 members of the Irish police in Limerick were injured in an accident after their car hit a loose horse. The magnificent creature lost its life on the spot while the police incurred injuries. Garda Representative Association Spokesperson John O’Keefe said the incident highlighted the “huge issue of loose horses for garda? around the country”; reports BBC.

Following the accident, the authorities took measures to impose restrictions. O’Keefe first put a ban on horse grazing within the city boundaries followed by an appeal to the owners. The report states that an appeal was made to the horse owners “to recognize that owning animals comes with responsibilities regarding safety; not just of garda? but of the general public as well”.? Though the complete reduction of horse fatalities remains distant, the right measures in the direction are agreeable steps in minimizing the heart-wrenching confrontations.
