On 12th September, the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) announced its annual grant award for the organizations that significantly play a role in equine races. The seasons lasting through to the end of a year certainly provide a hoard full of thrill to the equestrian enthusiasts. However, the work and efforts behind the matches are often unseen.

The people who look after the Thoroughbreds, the backstretch, and who work on the farm, play a staunch role while preparing horses for the races. And in support of them, the equestrian community raises annual funds. As per the reports this year, the numbers have seen a notable increase backing a huge number of organizations.

The Thoroughbred Charities of America holds a Stallion Season Auction every year to raise funds for charities. These include organizations working towards providing a better life for the equines and the people who look after them. This year’s auction saw a bidding availability of 200 seasons through an online portal. The live bidding session also included non-season items attracting an audience. The TCA also receives gifts from trusts that are diverted towards the cause. And accumulating its sum, TSA revealed its collection on Tuesday.

According to the TCA, the establishment managed to award a total of $821,000 in grants to 75 different organizations. These included 45 aftercare organizations, 20 backstretch and farm worker programs, six equine-assisted therapy organizations, three Thoroughbred incentive programs, and one research organization.

“Thanks to our generous donors, we are thrilled to be able to award grants to 75 organizations working tirelessly on behalf of Thoroughbreds and backstretch and farm workers,” said Erin Halliwell executive director of TCA according to Paulcik Report. “We are so proud of the impact our grantees make and we are pleased to support their work.” This year’s funds also included notable backing from the Race to Give fundraising campaign and the Cathy D. Perry Trust.

With its current grants, the TCA has continued to witness an increase in funding since its first operation in 1990.

The Thoroughbred Charities of America started as an act to promote the well-being of retired racehorses. Founders Herb and Ellen Moelis and the late Allaire DuPont hosted a small dinner auction that raised around $15000. The sum was then donated to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. They saw an increase annually but only decided to enlarge in 1997 when they collected nearly $1 million.

In 2022, the organization granted over $783,000 to 74 approved charities and about $26 Million to 200 charities over the past 33 years. The TCA also affiliates with other organizations that work towards similar causes. These include the Horses First Fund to assist Thoroughbreds in need of emergency aid, and Cómo, a mobile app that connects racing industry employees to vital services.
