The equestrian community is filled with iconic talent in various disciplines. From combined driving, para-driving, dressage, endurance, eventing, jumping, para-equestrian, and vaulting, the array of talent in the sport continues to grow and shine. In 2023, these iconic athletes showcased immense skill, dominating the sport with their outstanding contributions. Recognizing these contributions, athletes were celebrated with a huge honor from the US Equestrian Authority.
US Equestrian Authority recognizes and honors Athlete of the Year 2023
An Instagram post by US Equestrian and USA Jumping gave equestrian fans exciting news. Posting a picture of the talented five-time Olympic medalist McLain Ward, the post read, “Congratulations to McLain Ward—our 2023 International Equestrian of the Year award winner! 🏆🎉.” McLain had a phenomenal 2023, competing with 11 different horses internationally. Notably, he secured victories in two major show jumping events consecutively with HH Azur. McLain Ward also helped the U.S. Jumping Team win the FEI Jumping Nations Cup USA.

And if that wasn’t enough, he also contributed to Olympic qualification for Paris 2024 and won a team gold at the Pan American Games. This marked his second time winning the USEF International Equestrian of the Year award, following his first achievement in 2017. Expressing his gratitude on behalf of his and his team’s collective effort, he shared, “We are very honored to receive this award because it is chosen by our US Equestrian community.” Along with McLain, many other equestrian icons were honored for their massive efforts and contributions in 2023.
Other significant winners in the sport
John French, a renowned hunter-rider, won the 2023 USEF National Equestrian of the Year. Another notable award of the night was given to Tamie Smith and McLain Ward, which was the William C. Steinkraus Trophy for their achievements in eventing and show jumping. Tracy Bowman and Cynthia Screnci received the Becky Grand Hart Trophy for para-driving and para-dressage. Cecile Hetzel Dunn received the 2023 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award for her significant contributions to equestrian sports over many years.

Marin McKee was recognized as the 2023 USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year for her outstanding performances in various disciplines and contributions to the Arabian horse community. As the 2024 season kicks off, fans eagerly anticipate these icons to continue pushing boundaries and setting new standards in the sport.
