On 1st July, 2023, a 911 distress call greatly shook the local community of Longview, Texas, and the Gladewater Police Department. The call described a tragedy that unfolded at Gladewater Lake, where a man dived headfirst into a shallow section of the lake. The man made brutal contact with the rocky surface of the lake, and was in critical condition.

The police rushed to the scene along with emergency personnel. After the failure of several attempts to resuscitate the man, the police declared him dead. 

Alcohol Was Involved: Police

The victim of the tragedy, identified as Adam Gillette, was a 34-year-old local. According to eyewitness accounts, Gillette, unfortunately, chose to dive into a shallow part of the lake with a rocky bottom from a height of 40 feet. The initial investigation by the police concluded that alcohol may have a role to play in the death of Gillette. The police, however, have not ruled out any foul play and will investigate the case further. 

The area of the tragic accident is still open to the public; however, they have placed several signboards to warn the people. People use the site for an occasional swim, but it’s a no-diving zone. The area, however, is surrounded by tall embankments.

Melissa Kelly, who owns the Outlaws Bar, had known Gillette for two years. He was at the bar and was happily singing and playing his guitar there, before coming face to face with his tragic death.

Kelly was utterly shocked by the news and emphasized that Gillette loved to perform and was loved by the community for it. “He always brought everybody together,” she said, according to CBS. She noted that Gillette really loved his three children and claimed them to be the light of his life. His sudden and uneventful passing will now force his kids to carry on without the love and support of their father.

Stepping forward, Kelly has arranged for a benefit night at her bar to raise funds to support Gillette’s surviving family. This benevolent act doesn’t just help the family financially, but it also gives them a much-needed emotional cushion. Individuals like Kelly are examples of the true meaning of love, humanity, and empathy.
