Dutch track cyclist, Amy Pieters suffered an unfortunate crash last December. Since then, she was placed in an induced coma. But the status of her health has changed recently.

As per reports, the cycling champion has gained consciousness for the first time in four months.

Details relating to the crash

The cycling champion suffered a crash while training at a camp in Calpe, Spain. She lost consciousness soon after the accident due to severe brain damage. Following the accident, first responders rushed her to a hospital in Alicante.

Doctors had to perform emergency surgery to relieve pressure from her brain. After the surgery, they placed her in a medically-induced coma.

In January, Pieters was transferred to an inpatient unit in the Netherlands. There she was placed under the care of neurosurgeon and neurotrauma specialist, Professor Wilco Peul. She continued to be in an induced coma.

Her UCI Women’s team, WorldTeam SD Worx, updated the status of her condition soon after transferring her to the Netherlands. As per the update from her team, Amy was breathing independently and sedation had been phased out. The team also mentioned that her situation was “stable but unchanged.”

How is Amy Pieters doing now?

Her team has been providing constant updates about her condition ever since the crash. On Thursday, the team released a statement updating her condition as having improved slightly. The statement confirms that the cyclist have regained consciousness.

However, they added that doctors are not sure about the long-term symptoms she may exhibit as a result of her brain injury.

The statement by SD Worx read, “There is consciousness. This means that she can communicate slightly non-verbally. Amy recognizes people, understands what is being said, and is able to carry out more and more assignments.”

In the statement, the team further added, “Since mid February Amy Pieters has been following a specialized intensive neurorehabilitation programme at one of the member institutions of the EENnacoma network.”

The team concluded by stating, “The family appreciates the enormous sympathy shown, but also asks everyone to respect the privacy of those involved.”

Amy Pieters is a world class track cyclist who has won three consecutive Madison events during the World Championships in 2019, 2020, and 2021. She also won the Dutch national road race title in June 2021. Pieters competed in the Tokyo Olympic Madison event and come fourth along with Kirsten Wild.
