Veronica Ewers, a talented American cyclist, had her hopes of a successful Tour de France Femmes. However, her dreams have been shattered after a devastating crash. The crash involved five riders, including Ewers. Four other cyclists, Julie Van de Velde, Yara Kastelijn, Cédrine Kerbaol, and Kathrin Hammes, quickly recovered after the fall and continued the race. However, Ewers could not get up due to the severity of her injuries. She had to abandon the race, putting an end to her ambitions of achieving a high placement in the General Classification.
Veronica Ewers had finished in the ninth position in 2022 and had hoped for redemption this year. But in a twist of fate, she had to abandon the race just 54 kilometers away from the finishing line.

Ewers could not move her body after falling into a ditch on the side of the road. She had been lying on the ground in that position for several minutes before the race staff rescued her. They inspected her body for any severe injury and told her the bad news. The staff even prepared a stretcher to take Ewers to the hospital. But, the Idahoan native was not ready to give up that easily. She remounted her bike and rode a stretch despite the excruciating pain she was in. Ewers reached the finishing line in Blagnac, determined to complete the race she had trained so hard for.
As per an online report on Rouleur, “Ewers crossed the line in last place, 9:56 behind the peloton”. Her EF Education-TIBCO-SVB teammate, Magdeleine Vallieres, was waiting for her at the finish line to boost her morale. The unfortunate accident caused Ewers to fall from her 9th rank to 32nd. Her team quickly took the ace cyclist to the hospital for a complete check-up. Ewers’ misfortune left the EF Education-TIBCO-SVB team heartbroken, but they took pride in her determination and effort.

Tim Harris, the team’s DS, spoke to reporters, informing everyone, “the doctors were there but then she decided to keep on riding”. Harris was visibly upset because Ewers was their primary contender for the pink jersey this year. He said, “it’s super, super, super disappointing”. With similar support from the EF Education-TIBCO-SVB team, Ewers managed to earn the fourth-place in the GC. She also defeated the reigning champion, Annemiek van Vleuten, at the Giro Donne in June.
