The impromptu first hangout
In October 2020, the academy award winner connected with Armstrong via a zoom call to discuss his book, Greenlights. While the two friends were discussing the book, they spilled some beans about the stories from their past too.
Reminiscing about the first time they “sort of” hung out together, Mathew said that once when he had returned from a road trip he randomly called up Armstrong and asked him if he wanted to go out and grab dinner.
Adding to the story Lance said, “yeah you said you want to go grab a dinner, and I said all right I’ll come pick you up where am I going I’m at lot 7 at the pecan Grove rv rv park I said what the ** is this guy ***ng with me.”

However, the two did meet up for dinner that night and friends continued the escapades until very late. Armstrong continued the story, “and then, of course, that night it went late late as most of our nights did back then and with bongos fully clothed but we’ll get into the other bongo experience unclothed there were parts of that story that I didn’t know like that s**t was next level and that sort of changes it all right.”

The two first met in the early 20s during a game. Both of them were in the audience, with Lance sitting behind Matthew. The actor shared that when the host of the game spotted them and introduced them to the crowd; the audience started clapping for them.
According to the actor, while it was just loud cheers and claps for him, the crowd went ballistic when the host introduced Armstrong. The actor further added Lance’s reaction, which in turn led to the start of their amazing friendship. Reenacting Lance’s reaction, Matthew said, “and Lance just sits down and goes McConaughey, you hear that? Hey! hear that? That time I knew I liked you.”
