Magnus Carlsen and Garry Kasparov are two Grand Masters who have shaped the course of chess in their times. To simply question who is better out of the two will be an indignity to the contribution made by them towards the game of chess. In their first encounter, the 13-year-old Magnus Carlsen managed a draw against the world’s number one chess player, Garry Kasparov. However, instead of holding a grudge against the 28-year younger Carlsen, the Russian Grand Master started coaching him. Perhaps he realized early that the Norwegian chess prodigy was made for great things.
Magnus Carlsen is the combination of two chess greats
Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov are the two legends in the game of chess. Kasparov feels Carlsen has a part of both these chess greats. He said, “the reason Magnus is on top and seems unbeatable today. Magnus is a lethal combination of Fischer and Karpov.” It only makes sense, given that Magnus has been a constant world number one in an ever-changing game of chess.
Taking his stance even further, Kasparov added, “It’s very unusual because Fischer’s style was very dynamic, just fighting to the last moment. Karpov has an unparalleled ability to use every piece to the maximum ability.”
“Carlsen can go on as long as Fischer with all that passion and energy, and at the same time, being as meticulous and deadly as Karpov,” said Kasparov.
