Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, FIDE has banned all the Russian Grand Masters from international chess events. However, some of the players are still allowed in certain tournaments provided they compete under the FIDE banner.
Magnus Carlsen opens up about Sergey Karjakin’s ban from chess
The world chess champion Magnus Carlsen finally presents his stance on the Russian Grand Master Sergey Karjakin being banned by FIDE. He?said,?”Obviously I don’t agree with Karjakin in anything, but is it correct to ban people for opinions we don’t tolerate? I am not sure. It’s possible it pays off in a difficult time, but it also sets some precedents for what can come later.”

Magnus further?added,?“Is it good that we give him what he wants? He wants to become a martyr for the ?tyranny of sanctions? by the West. Now he can tell that story back home ? and it goes straight home in Russia. We are certainly helping him with that. We give him what he wants. I don’t know if that’s good or not, I am not sure.”

Sergey Karjakin was found guilty
The Russian Grand Master received a ban by FIDE for six months because of a violation of article 2.2.10 of the FIDE?code?of ethics. However, Karjakin, who challenged Carlsen in the 2016 world championship, has no regrets about his viewpoint. He accepted the decision taken by the chess authority and decided not to appeal against it.
