Rodeo can often become a tragic sport. In a sport where an individual’s bravery is tested constantly, sometimes an accident is all it takes to cast a somber shadow on a cowboy’s family. One such incident occurred recently at Stoney Nakoda First Nation.
Seth Saulteaux was competing in the Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) when he was bucked off by a bull. This was not the 19-year-old’s first rodeo. In fact, he had qualified for multiple finals over the course of his young career. The family of the deceased cowboy remembered the 19-year-old with an emotional Facebook post.

Seth’s entire family is devastated by his sudden loss. Remembering her baby brother on Facebook, Lita Krawler wrote, “Was there with him till his last breath. It’s so unbelievable that you’re gone now bro.” Lita claimed that his brother always looked out for those he considered family. She remembers her brother as someone with a huge heart, who always used to go out stronger and perform better after failing. Lita confirmed her brother’s love for the rodeo and wrote, “Everytime we talked about rodeo, we did nothing but uplift one another.”
She further claimed that Seth had great ambitions and was discussing his goals and plans with her before his untimely demise. Apart from the family, the local community also wrote strong messages of support for Seth and his family. The authorities claimed that Seth was bucked off and fatally injured during the INFR event. He suffered a blow to his head by the bull’s horn although his helmet remain intact. After his fall, Seth went over to the bucking chute, where he eventually collapsed.

Rodeo is a sport in which quite often a lot of dreams are cut short. The legends of cowboys and the charm of the untamed West may quickly fade after broken ribs and multiple fractures. Sitting on an untamed animal makes up for the perfect battle between an athlete and the animal to dominate each other. This very reason makes Rodeo one of the most dangerous sports in the world.
Each year, thousands of injuries happen as a byproduct of rodeo. A number of them are life-threatening in nature. Even with regulations and safety coming in, rodeo still remains a dangerous sport to participate in. Likewise, Seth succumbed to his injuries before the medical authorities could transport him to the hospital. Rodeo is a thrilling sport, but it often comes at a cost and the cost is not just endured by the cowboy, but also by their families.
