Out of all the sports that exist out there, bull riding would at least make the top three when it comes to gruesome deaths and accidents. Not an unexpected consequence, considering the fact that the athletes literally put themselves in the path of raging bulls. An exciting venture, but a recipe for disaster at the same time. Unfortunately for Caleb Robinson, it was a disaster that struck back in 2012.

Caleb Robinson, or Pistol Robinson as he is known by his fans, was nearly trampled to death by a 1,500-pound behemoth named Carillo Cartel. The incident took place at the 2012 Professional Bull Riders’ roundup. The shocking moment when Robinson almost got gored to death by the massive bull was caught on video, and least to say it was a trainwreck.

During the PBR 2012, which was held at Madison Square Garden, Robinson suffered through the worst eight seconds of his life. The terrifying incident was immortalized on film and shared on the official PBR YouTube channel. The video showed the then 28-year-old rider getting ready to go out on the mud on the back of a crazed bull. As soon as the gates opened, the giant charged out with Robinson mounting it, holding on for dear life.

When the bull was it, it started trying to buck off Pistol Robinson. The rider held his own for 6.50 seconds but fell face-first into the dirt after that. Robinson injured his spine and broke both his legs in the incident. The Daily News reported the event as well as its aftermath. According to the report, Robinson’s plight was thought to be the “Worst Wreck of 2012.” The report also reveals Pistol’s account of the ordeal. He said, “I was on the ground, and I started trying to crawl, and there was no support on my right thigh. I looked down and I saw that my left leg was also broken. And that’s when it sunk in: I broke both my legs. I may never ride bulls again.”

The extent of the injuries was such, that the bull rider almost gave up on the idea of ever being on bull-back again. “I just remember looking up at the lights and thinking, ‘This is it.” I wondered if I would ever walk again,” he said. The injured Caleb Robinson was taken to Bellevue Hospital. His legs were so mangled that he was earlier thought to be a case of a car accident. The bull broke his right femur, shattered his left fibula and tibia, and gave him two hairline fractures in his lower back. His injuries seemed insurmountable, but the braveheart Robinson did not accept defeat.

Pistol Robinson’s condition was not good after the accident. Due to his broken legs and splintered spine, he couldn’t even get out of bed, and into a wheelchair for two months. But he persevered, underwent rehabilitation regularly, and within a year, he was ready to mount a bull once again. When the subject of the 2013 PBR Monster Energy Invitational rodeo was broached before him, he said, “I just feel like there’s something that I’ve left on the table,” and added, “I don’t want to leave with that being my last ride. I want to finish it strong, put an exclamation point on the end.”

His recovery was painful, but Robinson eventually got back on his feet. After a long duration of agonizing therapy, he exclaimed, “I’m happy to be standing.” Yet, walking was another ballgame altogether. “I had to learn how to walk again on one leg that was still halfway broken, and another leg that was still fully broken, but there was no stopping me.” Robinson promised himself that he would do whatever it took to get on the back of a bull again. And he kept his promise.
