JB Mauney has left an unerasable imprint in bull riding. After starting his rodeo journey at the age of three, Mauney went on to become one of the best bull riders of all time. The 2x PRCA Champion broke several records in his career. However, he has broken the rules as well.

As the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) gears up to find the best, Rodeo Vegas hosted Mauney and Dale Brisby for its launching event. Amid many other interesting things, the rodeo legends recalled Mauney’s story of defying norms to smoke cigarettes.

JB Mauney recalls breaking rules to smoke cigarettes

Teton Ridge posted a clip of an interesting conversation between rodeo sensation Dale Brisby and JB Mauney on the sets of Rodeo Vegas’s launch event. “If you’re going to break the rules, do it safely”, the caption of the video reads as Mauney recalled the incidents of breaking rules to smoke cigarettes. “Tend to smoke a lot of cigarettes in the locker room, so gets kind of cloudy” he recalled.

However, Mauney is a responsible citizen. He would instead sneak into a shower or a bathroom to smoke one. “So there are only a few who come hang out with me in the back corner, well actually in the shower rooms”, the ‘boldest cowboy’ added. In the rodeo locker rooms, any locker rooms for that matter, smoking is prohibited. Although the 36-year-old broke the rule, he, however, ensured safety first.

Despite breaking the rule, Mauney ensured the safety

JB Mauney has broken numerous records in his career and still holds to some of those. He has the joint most number of PBR Premier Series wins and 2nd highest number of 90-point rides in bull riding history. He could easily get away with smoking a cigarette, yet ‘Dragon Slayer’ chose ‘safety first’.

Safety first, that way if I catch anything on fire, just turn the shower on”, Mauney revealed the reason behind smoking in shower rooms. He was caught several times by the guards. However, they would leave when Mauney declined to put out the cigarette, knowing he wasn’t risking anyone’s life by smoking in the bathroom.
