The dangers of bull riding are widely well-known. Getting stomped by humongous bulls weighing almost 2000 pounds can only result in grievous injury. And more often than not, bull riders are injured after being bucked off the back of a bull. This is why rodeos are some of the most dangerous sporting venues out there. What makes it even more terrifying is the fact that it’s not only dangerous, but it’s deadly as well.
The chances of falling off a bull and never getting up again are much higher than anyone would be comfortable with. Even when the odds are completely against them, cowboys giddy up and ride bulls. One might call it wreckless abandon, or simply an addiction to adrenaline. But ultimately, it is undeniable that bull riding is an art; one that has killed many. And Jason Gustavo Artavia Vasquez, unfortunately, met the same fate in 2018. Viewer discretion is advised.

The incident took place in Upala in the western Costa Rican province of Alajuela, and the shocking fall was caught on camera. According to the Daily Mail’s report on the incident, the bull rider initially tried to hold on to the bucking bull. All repeated attempts of holding on for dear life proved futile. When Vasquez fell, the bull crushed him by falling on top, then proceeded to toss him around like a rag doll.
In disturbing footage, the cowboy is seen making desperate attempts to somehow hold on to the furiously bucking bull. However, after continuing to buck for a few seconds, seconds that seem like an eternity, the bull, in its despair to lose Vasquez, lost its balance. Both, the rider and the bull can be seen going down together. Because of the heavy weight of the bull, the rodeo rider was crushed under the massiveness.
Not only was Jason Gustavo Artavia Vasquez crushed, but he also got trapped under the gigantic bull due to its heavy body. While the rider was knocked unconscious, the bull was not. After falling, it started trying to get up like its life depended on it. During these ministrations of the bull, Vasquez was still unconscious. This is when real disaster struck.

According to the Daily Mail, “The bull scrambles to its feet, carrying Vasquez with it, tossing the unconscious mounted rider around like a rag doll.” As the bull continued trying to buck off the rider, the then 28-year-old cowboy fell off the back of the bull and landed in the dirt with a sickening crash. It was evident at this point that Vasquez’s body was completely lifeless. After Vasquez fell, many people took advantage of the bull’s distraction and tried to rescue the rider. However, it was too late.
Red Cross worker Marina Villalobos said that Artavia Vasquez was collected by an ambulance in critical condition and taken to the Hospital Enrique Baltodano. The rider was declared to be dead shortly after he reached the hospital. People were none too happy to hear the tragic news and even opposed the bull riding culture. Someone said, “It is high time we banned ‘entertainment’ based on animal abuse that also proves dangerous to humans.” Another viewer said, “It is a real shame that big TV networks promote this barbarism.”
