While describing Lockwood, PBR founder and bull rider TY Murray said, “Super talented, athletic guy. He’s a small guy, but he is also a very strong guy.” He further claimed that pound for pound, he can put Lockwood against anybody. One expert praised the 25-year-old that despite being really flashy and he can spur just about any bull that he wants. PBR Stock Contractor Chad Berger also heaped heavy praise on Lockwood.
He claimed that he once told Hall of Famer Cody Lambert about Lockwood’s bull riding. Berger said that Jess Lockwood is a mix of Ty Murray and Chris Shivers’ styles put together. Lockwood’s balance, control, and aggression have always been one of his best qualities. His world title-winning performance alone at the age of 20 years old hinted at a star in the making. The 25-year-old’s ride on Chisel was one of the best rides of his bull riding career. Still pretty young, Lockwood is on track to go down in the record books of professional bull riding. His most recent notable performance came in January 2023 during PBR’s Unleash The Beast tour.

After suffering an injury in February 2022, Lockwood marked his return with a runner-up position at the 2023 Unleash The Beast tour. He scored event aggregate points of 180.25 and 102 points. The 2x PBR winner also scored 92 points, the event’s best points overall. Lockwood registered no points during the second round as he was bucked off within 4.02 seconds by Lone Survivor. His total purse came down to $23,329.67. It was 2018 PBR world champion Kaique Pacheco of Brazil who nabbed the top spot.
