The animal athletes of bull riding are as an integral part of the thrilling sport as the riders. Throughout the years, these 1500-2000 lb weighing animals have won contests and hearts through their agility, power, and speed; leaving a lasting impression.

Most of the bucking bulls hold a career span of 2–4 years. But bulls like Bushwacker and Bodacious have held the esteem of riders and enthusiasts alike for decades long. Today, yet another one of PBR’s remarkable bulls is making its way toward a ranch to retire alongside many. And as Happy Camper leaves, he leaves with appreciation and applause.

PBR bids one of bull riding world’s cherished bulls

Entering the Canada National Finals, Happy Camper was at No.4 in contention for the ‘bull of the year‘ title. Though he lost the title to Built Tough, the beast retired as the first two-time Bull of the Year champion in PBR Canada history. Cherishing his career and retirement, PBR wrote, Happy Camper Retirement. Thanks for a legendary career!”

Heading into his retirement, Happy Camper held an 87.5% buckoff percentage and remained undefeated against right-handed riders. “He’s got a big heart,” owner Josh said about Happy Camper. The bull was the fifth on the farm and remained ‘special’ throughout his career. However, he wasn’t the only one from the farm to bid adieu to his career this year.

The legends that shifted paths this year

On the farms of Two Bit Bucking Bulls alongside Happy Camper was another celebrated bull, Catch My Drift. The 9-year-old marked his rodeo journey in 2018. Since then, the bull made it to the PBR World Finals twice, in 2019 and 2021. Further, his bucking number stood at 56 with 3 of his 22 qualified rides fetching a 90-point ride. The 2020 Bull of the Year found his retirement path early in March 2023.

Another bull to retire this year was the 2021 PBR Bull of the Year, Woopaa. The cherished bull had a bucking career of 3.5 years and was ridden 16-of-38 times, and not been ridden for less than 92.5 points until 2023. The bull was also the one that provided Jose Vitor Lemme and PBR two highest scores in history; 97.75 and 98.75. Woopaa also retired in March with coveted titles to his name.

The next name on the list belongs to Big Black. The bull also known as Big Pet, retired as one of the most popular and highest-earning bulls to be honored at PBR teams. Likes of Chase Outlaw, JB Mauney, and Daylon Swearingen are often associated with Big Black for his performance. His buckoff stood at 62% as he said a final goodbye. Rach or ground, these cherished beasts are going to reside in hearts for decades to come.
