As bull riding continues to amaze, the sport can get pretty sad at times, nostalgic to be precise. The 2024 season may be a hell lot of entertaining, but at the same time, rodeo enthusiasts will have to keep tasting the bitter-sweet nostalgia as the 2011 PRCA World Champion makes an inevitable announcement. After a two-decade-long reign in the rodeo arenas, the American cowboy has decided to hang up his boots.

Despite a stellar run in 2023, the age has caught up with the Wrangler NFR title holder. He won the coveted Basin City Freedom Rodeo, and Cascade Pro rodeo in 2023, and will now look to cap off an illustrious career in 2024.

Bull Riding World Champion announces retirement

Shane Proctor is counted among the rodeo greats, and it’s time to bid farewell to the 38-year-old in 2024. In the latest update on his Instagram handle, Proctor announced that 2024 will mark his ‘last 365 days‘ on bucking bulls. “I’ve always done it best when I can see my goals in writing and I’ve always done things my way, so 2024 will be my last 365 days of riding bulls“, he captioned the emotional post.

But wait, he will be still around the rodeo arenas. Proctor added that he could ride some broncs or rope calves from the next year. “Now you might see me riding some broncs or roping a couple calves after that, But 2024 WILL be the last year of bull riding“, he expressed. To cap off the remarkable career, and to put stellar performances for bull riding enthusiasts to watch, the 9x PRCA finalist has also urged fans to ‘watch him in his last year’. On a finishing note, Proctor expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and fans ahead of the emotional season for all of them, and himself as well.

Shane Proctor’s remarkable career

After turning professional in 2005, Shane Proctor soon became one of the most respected names in the arena. His first major breakthrough came in 2008, winning the Toughest Cowboy reality television competition. Soon after, Proctor emerged triumphant at the YMBL Championship Rodeo in 2009, and then 2011 marked one his best seasons of life. After a scintillating season, he was crowned the PRCA World Champion of the Year.

Proctor has been named PBR Finalist 9 times and has qualified for NFR 6 times between 2011 and 2021. He also won the Wrangler NFR Average title in 2016. Amassing over $1,520,920 in career earnings, Shane Proctor will surely be remembered in the history books of this exhilarating sport.
