The 2024 Paris Olympics were unique for many reasons, but one of the most exciting additions was the inclusion of breakdancing as an official Olympic sport. This marked a historic moment as the first dance sport to be featured on the Olympic stage. However, while the event itself was groundbreaking, it was an unexpected athlete who truly stole the limelight—B-girl Raygun. Raygun made history by securing the first-ever Olympic spot in the B-Girl competition.
Her performance was eagerly anticipated, and she shocked the crowds with her one-of-a-kind moves, including the signature Kangaroo Hop and the Floor Wriggle. These moves, though unique, became iconic for a very different reason. Despite her creativity and originality, the 37-year-old faced a harsh reality in the competition—she contested three battles and failed to score a point in any of them. But that didn’t stop Rachael Gunn from becoming an overnight sensation. So much so, that her unconventional journey had inspired comedian Steph Broadbridge to craft a musical based on it. However, it never saw the light of the day. Let’s see what really went down!

The show titled ‘Raygun: The Musical’ was set to debut at Kinselas in Darlinghurst, Sydney, on Saturday. However, Raygun’s team intervened, leading to the musical being scrapped. However, the B-Girl reiterated that she wasn’t aware of the production and her team first heard of it through the media. The 37-year-old told 9 News that numerous people assumed her team was responsible for it or had approved of it. Concerned about damaging both personal and professional relationships, the team decided to nip it in the bud.
“This is why my management team and legal team had to work so quickly to shut the musical down,” she admitted. While the Australian wasn’t happy with canceling it so close to the launch, she reiterated that if the comedian consulted them beforehand, it would have led to a different outcome. While many would assume it’s because the B-Girl’s team wanted to prevent her from being turned into a joke, she explained that wasn’t the case.
Raygun has always enjoyed watching numerous fans showcase their take on her performance in the French capital. She went as far as to highlight that money didn’t have anything to do with it either. So, was there another reason that led to this decision? Steph Broadridge believed the musical would be great for the B-Girl’s brand. However, hours before the show, Gunn’s lawyers got in touch with the comedian and sent her a cease and desist letter.
The 37-year-old’s legal team stated that she owned the dance moves. They were also committed to protecting her intellectual property and ensuring that her brand remained strong and respected. They had nothing against the comedian’s efforts while developing the show. However, they had to safeguard the B-Girl’s creative rights. While this statement caused quite a stir, it wouldn’t be the first time that Gunn has found herself in the middle of a controversy.
Do we remember the B-Girl announcing her retirement?
After becoming an overnight sensation in the French capital, the Aussie wasn’t prepared for the waves of scrutiny that came after. On November 6, she opened up about the backlash on Australia’s 2DayFM “The Jimmy and Nath Show.” When the hosts asked her if dancing was a part of her life, Raygun confirmed that while she still breaks, she wouldn’t compete anymore. So, that means that she’s retired, right? Turns out, she was only considering it.
However, this led to a swarm of rumors claiming that she was retiring. The B-Girl was having none of it and quickly shut it down by reiterating that she wasn’t done dancing. Appearing on The Today Show, she explained that the internet took her earlier comments out of context. “It’s not a decision that I came to; this turned into a story,” she exclaimed.

So what did the Aussie mean by her statement, you ask? Raygun merely meant that she would step back from certain competitions. Given how the Olympics will no longer feature breakdancing, she will continue to be a part of community jams. Does this mean she isn’t walking away?
“You try and stop me; I’m not ever going to stop dancing,” she admitted. She still enjoys breaking with her partner at home and has numerous tricks up her sleeve to impress the world. Despite her controversial stint at the Paris Olympics, the Aussie still hasn’t lost her love for the art and looks forward to spreading joy through it.
