“I Didn’t Like Being on a Diet and Having to Take Drugs”: Ronnie Coleman Was Initially Insecure About the Path He Would Have to Take in Order to Be a Bodybuilding Champion

The eighth consecutive winner of the Mr. Olympia title, Ronnie Coleman, is the GOAT of the sport and has rightfully earned himself the title “King.” Even though it has been decades since he retired from the sport, his dominance in bodybuilding remains undisputed.

But did Ronnie want to be a bodybuilder? From a desire to get a free gym membership to become the bodybuilding GOAT, Ronnie’s story is truly unique!

Ronnie could have never thought

If Ronnie wanted to take a left, the life scenarios made him choose the right. Despite majoring in accounting, Ronnie could not get a job in his said field. So eventually, he joined the Police department. Having a desire to get pretty big and muscular, the officer used to work out whenever convenient.

On realizing that Ronnie used to work at the police station, the size of which, as he says, was “about the size of a bathroom,” his friend did something special. The fellow officer took him to the ‘Metroflex Gym.’ It was the owner there who, for the first time, asked Ronnie if he considered bodybuilding.

Identifying his talent, the owner commented, “you need to compete. You could be world champion one day.” But at that time, Ronnie was not interested. As he just joined the police department. He quotes, “I didn’t like being on a diet and having to take drugs.“

Ronnie Coleman fell for the temptation

Adamant on his decision, Coleman had no intention to look at bodybuilding ‘professionally.’ However, having the desire to get big muscles, he would religiously come to the gym, and the owner would, as usual, try to convince him. But then came an unexpected proposal came that made Coleman think.

Soon Dobson, the gym owner, proposed that he would give him a “free membership.” But only if Ronnie competes in the upcoming show. Unable to say a “no,” the cop gave in. Ronnie could never have thought that his temptation to get a free membership would eventually be the first step toward his bodybuilding glory.
