“Could Have Ruined My Father’s Career”: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Daughter Opened Up on the Pressure of Growing Up in Her Father’s Shadow

Holding a chair of public importance and executing the roles with perfection was not an easy thing for ex-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The seven times Mr. Olympia champion has always been a public figure. With life closely followed, the media and public hardly missed even gym outings of Arnie.

The same holds for Arnold’s family. “With a big name comes big responsibility.” Understanding this at a young age, 13-year-old Katherine Schwarzenegger knew she was under the constant public glare.

Arnold’s daughter, under pressure 

The Governor’s chair not only brought responsibilities to Arnold but also to his family. His eldest daughter Katherine knew for a fact the “choices she made in life” had more severe repercussions.

From a young age, she knew she had to act responsibly. Explaining further, she says, “It could have ruined my father’s career if I was caught drunk driving or something like that.” Being the eldest, she knew that she needed to fit into the image. The pressure, as she says, was “totally different.” Everyone around her expected her “to be perfect.”

However, unlike everybody’s expectations, she did not lead her life to be the “perfect kid.” Adding further, she explains, “I did go out, I did drink, I had a boyfriend.” Growing up, she had her fun times.

Praising Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria as parents 

It became big news in the tabloids when Arnold and Maria split their ways. That phase was not just difficult for the couple but also for their four kids. Sharing her experience during the said time, she said, “we remained a family unit no matter what happened.”

Praising her parents for making efforts to ensure the family remained united. She adds that they “remained very, very normal,” In making sure the children were happy despite the happenings, the parents “did a great job.“
