The ’80s were a period of action films dominated by the rivalry of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Both actors pushed their limits in an attempt to come out on top. The rivalry treated fans to movies like Rambo, Commando, Rocky, and The Terminator. Over time, the two action heroes became good friends, even featuring together in films like The Expendables and The Escape Plan.

Having spent decades trying to ‘one-up’ each other, both the actors grew to know many things about each other. As a result, their friendship grew stronger. As is customary in friendship, friends often make fun of each other. Stallone once revealed a funny and ironic incident involving Schwarzenegger pulling his leg.

Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to improve Stallone’s accent

Hailing from Austria, former bodybuilding champion, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is adored by many. One reason behind Arnold’s popularity is his accent. While the bodybuilder-actor has drastically improved his speech, it can still be a hard nut to crack. Similarly, his long-time acting rival and friend, Stallone, has slurred speech (arising from complications during birth) giving him a unique accent.

During an interactive session, Stallone once revealed how Schwarzenegger pointed out his accent and had a humorous suggestion about the same. Sylvester said, “Can you believe Arnold Schwarzenegger corrects me? ‘You have an accent, ‘I go, really?’ Big one! We should open up a speech school for people that never want to be understood.”

Stallone shared more of the conversation as he recalled his statement. “How did we ever make it? I mean, I’m bad, but you’re horrible.” During the same session, Stallone suggested he and Arnold should do an interview together. Now imagine what would that be like! Two great friends with unique accents (that many don’t understand often) going at it with each other, sharing banter of the highest order.

During a conversation on a late-night talk show, Schwarzenegger revealed how he tricked Sylvester into doing a terrible movie. Arnold said back in the ’80s the competition between them was so fierce that it even came down to who killed more people (in movies) and who killed them more creatively. Discussing his trickery, Schwarzenegger said they approached him with a comedy genre movie named, Stop Or My Mother Will Shoot. “So, I read the script, and it was a busy sh*t. So I said to myself, ‘I am not gonna do this movie.'”

Arnold added, “Then they went to Sly, and then Sly called me, and he says, ‘hey, have they ever talked to you about this movie?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I was thinking about doing it. This is a really brilliant idea.’ And so when he heard that, because we were in competition, he immediately called them and said, ‘Look, whatever it takes, I do the movie.'”

And as Arnold expected, the movie did terribly at the box office and was a massive flop. But it gave him a great story to tell later on. Safe to say, he ‘terminated’ Stallone on that occasion.
