Bodybuilding veteran Mike O’Hearn is among the most experienced bodybuilders and powerlifters still active in his 50s. Despite being 54, the American trains regularly, maintaining a near competition-ready, ripped physique, all year round. While many on the internet have accused him of being a fake natty, O’Hearn has always talked about optimizing his training and diet to maintain a world-class physique. In his most recent YouTube video, the four-time Mr. Universe yet again reiterated the importance of training correctly.
While talking about exercise consistency, Michael O’Hearn talked about “consistently doing it right,” instead of simply being consistent. O’Hearn said successful athletes know how to train properly and continually progress. However, there are many fitness freaks on the internet demanding 100% from their body during every workout, but that’s never optimal. Here’s why.
Going all out is not sustainable

Mike O’Hearn recorded the video doing cardio and titled it Cardio Rant. He said the world-class athletes who do well in their sport give time to recovery. “You sprint. Then you rest, and you recover. You analyze. Then you go again,” said the former Mr. Universe. After analyzing their performance, one might feel the need to change an aspect of their workout routine.
“You’re never sprinting every single time… In no athletics do you go a 100 (percent), all the time, 365 (days),” said the power bodybuilder. The 54-year-old then advised his followers to be “careful,” about guys who “just regurgitate information they read.” Many people on the internet tell others to always work out till failure. However, “I don’t want that for you,” said O’Hearn.
The American Gladiators star snubbed those who ask for unsustainable exertion and consistency. “I work out 100% Every single day. Great! Burned out in two years… I do cardio, six days a week, 10 miles a day, or whatever it is. Great! You’re deteriorating your body,” said the bodybuilding icon sarcastically. However, he also revealed the right approach.

While the 54-year-old might have named his video Cardio Rant, he said that he is not the only one highlighting the importance of rest. “This is common logic with people that are successful in every aspect of sports,” said the former competitive powerlifter. The 6’2 ft bodybuilder recommended people pay attention to analysis.

O’Hean said that people need to do what successful athletes do. “There are times that they come off, they have an off-season, feed the body, minimize the work, analyze it and then move forward again,” he said.
