RCT, or randomized controlled trial, is a research design often considered the most trustworthy of all. A recent study was done to check if there are any additional benefits to using testosterone over simply exercising. Collecting data on various fronts and performing research on different subsets of people, the trial came up with a fascinating result. Not only it might surprise many, but it could also serve as a valuable lesson for most bodybuilding fanatics. Vying on this fact-based research, bodybuilding legend and former Mr. Olympia winner Arnold Schwarzenegger has now shared this insight with everyone.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the latest edition of his newsletter, ‘The Pump Daily’, tackles the subject of testosterone and if it’s better than plain exercise. Citing the RCT research, here’s Schwarzenegger’s bold claim on it.

“You don’t need pills or injections if you want to transform your health. A little movement is the best medicine”, was Arnold’s resting statement on the matter. But how did he substantiate the claim? It wasn’t out of thin air. Arnold Schwarzenegger believes that it’s never too late to start exercising and that it may benefit our bodies far more than injecting testosterone can ever do. Here’s more into the research.

To conduct their research, scientists created four different groups – one that only performed workouts, the other that only received testosterone, a third group that was subjected to a combination of workout and testosterone, and a control group that did neither. The results clearly saw the exercise group improve with regard to their strength, muscle, and cardiovascular fitness. They also burned more fat.

The Austrian Oak said, “The researchers found that adding testosterone did not add any additional benefits to exercise alone. Taking testosterone alone did increase muscle mass in the upper and lower body, but it didn’t significantly impact strength, endurance, or fat mass. And it didn’t lead to additional benefits above and beyond the exercise group”. Ever so diligent, the 75-year-old also once cited the Journal of Bone and Mineral research to make a separate claim.

Age is just a number

Schwarzenegger wrote in another one of his newsletters that women with low muscle mass are 63 times more likely to die early than those with more muscle mass. Muscle mass is also the only thing that testosterone helps increase. However, Schwarzenegger’s claims are clear as to what exercising alone can do, as compared to the anabolic steroid.

It is also noteworthy that the study was done between people from age 50-70. A terrific age group to aid with the study and to remind people it’s never too late to exercise.
