Years After His Troubled Relationship With His Father, Arnold Schwarzenegger Drilled His Kids With the Same Routine He “Hated” as a Child: “Always Gave Them the Bill in Restaurants”

Starting at an early age of 15 to earn his way through life, Arnold Schwarzenegger did not have an easy childhood. His strained relationship with his father Gustav Schwarzenegger was an important reason why he migrated from Austria to America. In his autobiography Total Recall, Schwarzenegger disclosed a practice his father enforced on him and his friends to follow, something that he wasn’t too particularly fond of. He may not be good, there was something good in him. And Schwarzenegger knew that!

It is a known fact that the bodybuilding legend’s father was unsupportive of his weight training, often leading to situations that left him embarrassed. Even so, Schwarzenegger picked on a few good things that informed his principles when he became a father.

The Austrian Oak narrated, “I  taught my kids maths drills that my father had used on Meinhard and me.”  Continuing, he added that his father made them begin math drills a month before school to train and exercise the brain.

Further, the bodybuilding legend elaborated, “Not only did my brother and I have to do the maths drills but so did anybody who came over to play.” This act of forcing kids to do math drills discouraged many kids to visit the little Austrian’s house. “I hated it of course”, Schwarzenegger admitted in his autobiography.

However, Schwarzenegger doesn’t feel so anymore. 35 years later, he found himself drilling his kids to solve math problems. The Austrian Oak explained, “I always gave them the bill in restaurants to figure out the 20 per cent tip.” Adding to this, Schwarzenegger recounted how his kids would calculate the bill in restaurants and sign in Schwarzenegger’s name. “It was a whole routine and they loved it”, Schwarzenegger remarked.

This was not the only time Schwarzenegger spoke about how he brought up his kids. Once, in a conversation with his daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger, the Austrian Oak recalled an interesting anecdote that showed a different side of his upbringing.
