In life, everyone has at least one thing they regret or wished they did differently. The six-time Mr. Olympia title holder, Dorian Yates, is no different. A legend like him, too, has made some mistakes during his career, that he now regrets. Yates was the first mass monster in the bodybuilding world. Naturally, it required months of strict diets and strenuous training to achieve the feat.

While that might have gotten him several titles in the biggest bodybuilding competition, it did come with its downsides. In a recent interview, Yates shed light on his insane training routine and why he regrets it.

The 60 years old English bodybuilder, Dorian Yates, recently appeared in an interview with Jay Vincent. Vincent asked Yates if given a chance to go back and change if there was anything he would’ve done differently. To this Yates replied, “See what I told myself is I would train like all out for about 6 to 8 weeks because I learned through experience to see as bad as much as I could go or I would start to get symptoms of over-training.”

After this, he used to have no choice but to slow down for a few weeks and then pick it up again. Without even realizing it, he eventually built a cycle but never once gave his body proper rest. Yates asserts most injuries that may occur in a moment are in fact an accumulation of scar tissue and little things, like inflammation, that have been overlooked for a long time. This is why he concluded, “…I would’ve given myself a bit more rest.”

While training for a competitive sport like bodybuilding, competitors often go far and beyond to get the pump. Dorian Yates wasn’t the only one who realized the downside of pushing their limits, too late in life. 3x Mr. Olympia Frank Zane also shares a similar opinion.

Does Frank Zane have regrets too?

With an aesthetic physique like that of a Greek God, Frank Zane ruled the bodybuilding world in the late 70s. To date, fans revere him for his contribution to the sport. While Zane enjoyed the highs of his success and continues to be a guiding force for the new-age bodybuilder, there are things this veteran, too, wishes he did differently.

In an interview with Simply Shredded in 2008, Zane claimed, had he known the side effects of heavy lifting, he wouldn’t have done it. Heavy lifting made him focus on the weights and ignore the signs his body was giving at the time. It eventually did some irreparable damage to his body, which he is now paying the price for. Therefore, Zane always advocates going easy on one’s body and knowing their limits.
