During the said tenure, he did not just execute official duties with utmost sincerity but also aggressively worked towards long-term policies for the betterment of society. Amongst the many issues that he worked towards was education. Thus, as Bell Gardens Intermediate School celebrated the 20th anniversary of Proposition 49, Arnold returned to share his deep insights.
Arnold and his concern for students
Unlike his ex-wife Maria, Arnold did not come from a family of politicians. His political entry was more driven by personal experiences and the desire to make society a better place.
Last week the ex-Governor sat down with FOX’s Elex Michaelson to discuss The After School Education and Safety Act, which he spearheaded in 2002. For the unversed, the said program sets aside $650 million a year for after-school programs in California. During the interview, the former governor spoke at great length about the landmark initiative. He did not just focus on the benefits but said on the thought that encouraged him to look into the issue.
Drawing parallelism from his own life, Arnold recalled his life in Austria. He revealed that his parents were always back home during his growing-up days. He speaks about the fond memories that he had of them. But the situation here in America stands different. It is mainly because both parents work, and the children are usually left alone to care for themselves after school. Raising a serious concern, he enquires, “what happens with those kids after 3:00?”

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an important point
Arnold revealed that he became passionate about this initiative because he saw 70% + of children come from homes where both parents work. Thus, he brings focus to the point that the children are usually left to attain themselves after school. He points out, “there’s no one there to take them to the sports fields, to do homework with them, to help them with the homework, to do tutoring or whatever.”
Thus, the necessity for after-school programs. As he talks about the program and its course for the last 20 years, the politician also highlights the fact that many kids are not able to access the programs. Arnold is thus hopeful for a better future. Sharing his hopes, he adds, “on the national basis, we have to do much, much better, too….”
