Legends are not born. They make themselves better than anyone else by working with dedication, consistency, and perseverance. However, it isn’t possible without a helping hand, or as Ronnie Coleman calls it, angels. In a recent YouTube video on Ronnie Coleman’s channel, he speaks with Derek Lunsford about a helping hand that changed his career trajectory forever.
Ronnie Coleman was struggling for a long time in his bodybuilding career when he wasn’t able to secure a spot in the top five. But a piece of advice from his rival, bodybuilding maestro Flex Wheeler, pushed him to find the person, who changed his life. However, it didn’t go in favor of Wheeler as he lost to Coleman in the 1998, Mr. Olympia.

After competing for more than half a decade without any success, Ronnie Coleman received golden advice from one of his rivals, Flex Wheeler. In the video, Coleman confessed, “Flex Wheeler is the reason why I won the Mr. Olympia.” Although he is not the guy Coleman talked about. When Wheeler came to know that Coleman had been training on his own, he suggested Chad Nicholls’ name to Coleman. Moreover, Wheeler asked him to train with him. And that decision, changed Coleman’s trajectory in life.
The King was always a tough and hard-working guy. What he lacked was deep professional knowledge about how bodybuilding as a sport worked. And that is what Nicholls fixed. Mr. Olympia 2022 runner-up, Derek Lunsford, asked Coleman about what changes he saw when he began working with Chad. The King replied, “He changed everything I was doing. I went from doing an hour of cardio a day to two hours. I went from half a pound of food with it every meal to a whole pound. I went from maybe training like 45 minutes to an hour a day to about maybe hour, hour and a half, sometime hour 15 minutes of training.”

He continued, “Trying to do some of everything, you know. I was working all my body parts as much as I could”. Emphasizing on the focus he paid to different body parts, he continued, “I went to working calves maybe like once a week to like three times a week. We’re gonna abs maybe once a week to three times a week. He changed pretty much everything I was doing. And had I not gone with him, I would have never, ever figured that out on my own.”
Further, Coleman talked about the changes he brought to his diet, which proved to be a real game changer. Coleman added, “I went from probably eating 400 grams of protein a day to 600. I went from eating like 400 grams of carbs a day to like 100.” Reiterating how he lacked knowledge on this front, he said, “And I would have never, ever figured that out on my own for sure because I had no idea that you could put on a lot of quality muscle from eating food. Had no idea whatsoever.”

In the same video, Coleman talked about another angel who changed his life when he pushed him into bodybuilding. Coleman always says bodybuilding isn’t an individual sport; there is a whole team behind the scene who help the bodybuilders reach their maximum potential. Fortunately, The King had a great team that pushed him beyond his limits to become the best.
