Former Mr. Olympia Phil Heath is among the most successful bodybuilders in history. The bodybuilding icon won the Mr. Olympia title seven times, equalling Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s record. Throughout his bodybuilding career, Heath looked at the physiques of some of the greatest bodybuilders and tried to emulate what he thought was the best part of their physique. Recently, four-time Mr. Olympia winner Jay Cutler also pointed out Heath’s incredible genetics. However, despite such success, the Gift has battled a disorder for over two decades.
In a recent Instagram video, the bodybuilding legend talked about living with body dysmorphia. “Body dysmorphia is real!!!” wrote Heath in the caption before discussing how the disorder that affects 10 million Americans every year affects him. Phil Heath also revealed how he has successfully dealt with the condition for the last two years.

Earlier, the seven-time Mr. Olympia uploaded a video where he confessed that he has suffered from body dysmorphia “for a very long time. Well over 20 years.” In the caption, Heath explained how the disorder invaded his life. “It’ll truly steal the joy out of your days making yourself believe that you’re not good enough and you’ll never ever reach your goal.” Heath wrote.

Despite reaching his goals, Heath wrote that he would disregard the compliments of friends, family, and even his fans. He wrote, “because of our inability to love ourselves we can’t even be in the moment and receive love from others.” However, for the last two years, Heath has tackled the disorder through “gratitude.”

“I get up in the morning. Go to the bathroom. I say, ‘Phil, I love you. I love you for everything that life has thrown at you… you stood tall and you decided that you wanted to do better’.” said the seven-time Mr. Olympia in the video. Heath said he tells himself that he is “worthy” and “strong,” despite failing sometimes. Heath said those facing the disorder shouldn’t discredit their achievements. “We pick ourselves apart so much to where we become paralyzed. And don’t move forward.” said the former Mr. Olympia.

Besides sharing his story, the bodybuilding champion encouraged others to do what he has been doing for the last two years. He encouraged everyone battling body dysmorphia to look into the bathroom mirror every morning and say “I love you,” as Heath tells himself.
He also reminded everyone that they are capable of achieving greatness. “Continue to declare that you’re gonna always give this life of yours love and respect,” wrote the champion bodybuilder. While he has been practically battling this alone, having the love of his life to support him and see the man behind the muscles and trophies has surely made it easier for him.
