A journalist hailing from a political background and married to an actor, Maria Shriver, tasted different kinds of fame. From Hollywood to the newsroom, the journalist has always held charge of the crowd. When her husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, began contesting for elections, the journalist was in a sticky situation.

Always having contested for the Democrats, Shriver was now campaigning for the opposition. While the journalist eventually became the first lady of California, she had some fears. In an earlier interview with GQ, she opened up about some of her concerns during her tenure.

Maria Shriver revealed what she was afraid of while campaigning for Arnold Schwarzenegger

Shriver was close to her uncle John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States and a Democrat. She was a member of The Women’s Conference, a non-profit, non-partisan organization, in addition to being a journalist. However, life took a turn when a new chapter in her life compelled her to switch sides. Arnold ran for office as a Republican.

Yet, the journalist had some distinct fears. In 2008, Shriver talked about why being the first lady wasn’t as easy. While she ensured that leading a women-first organization was her priority, people still questioned her ideals. One of her worst fears of campaigning for Arnold stemmed from this. She expressed, “I was fearful that I wasn’t supporting a woman. There were a lot of people who felt, ‘How could you do that?'”.

However, Shriver pushed through all this. Be it facing 10,000 democrats while she stood up for a Republican or challenging her ideals – she fought the debate within her. While the journey wasn’t easy, Shriver managed campaigning not one but two elections for her Republican husband.

Unfortunately, in 2011, Arnold and Maria separated over the former’s infidelity. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the Governor of California from 2003 to 2011 – spanning two terms.
