Among the many greats to have graced the sport with their elite physique, a few bodybuilders cemented their legacy with outstanding accomplishments. One of them was ‘The Chemist’ aka Frank Zane, three-time Mr. Olympia winner. 

Like many other bodybuilders with interesting nicknames, Frank was also known as the ‘chemist’ because of his bachelor of science degree from Wilkes University. In addition, he studied chemistry and mathematics for 13 years. Known for his Greek god-like physique, Zane once stated an interesting logic behind his tanning during his bodybuilding career.

The theory of getting a natural tan by Frank Zane 

Zane turned 79 this year, but he shows no sign of aging, thanks to his workout regime. The legend retired in 1983, bidding farewell to professional bodybuilding. However, with hardcore dedication toward lifting, he continues to inspire many. 

In addition, Frank creates workout videos and trains clients willing to travel to California to seek his advice. Once, during an interview with MensHealth, Frank shared an interesting tip for modern-day bodybuilders.

He shared, “I also took advantage of the California sun, maintaining a naturally dark tan because it reflects light better. Spray tanner can help somewhat, but you still need a natural base tan to use it effectively.”

Frank was the epitome of physical beauty during his golden era due to his sleek lines, the efficiency of his muscles, and nearly perfect symmetry. His physique was enough to attract the crowd’s attention, primarily due to his tanned skin tone. From 1977 to 1979, he flexed the ideal balance of his body and won three titles of Mr. Olympia. 

Frank crafting a benchmark in the bodybuilding world

The legend was born on 28th June 1942 in Kingston, Pennsylvania. His parents would have never thought that the kid who turned out to be a math genius would enter the world of bodybuilding and take it by storm.

Notably, Frank once described the situation, which altered his career choice. It was just a magazine that man fourteen-year-old Frank change his perspective.

He got the vintage muscle-building magazine from his high school’s math class dustbin. Enthusiastically, Frank was influenced by the magazine and found the physical push to make his physique like the greek gods. For starters, he joined the Wilkes-Barre YMCA gym; he also purchased equipment for himself. And the rest, as you know it, is history.
