“They Have a Lot of Fans”: Reigning Mr. Olympia Big Ramy Discussed the Perception of Bodybuilding in Egypt in 2019

When it comes to bodybuilding, the reigning champion, Big Ramy, needs no introduction. Big Ramy made his professional bodybuilding career debut in 2013, and currently, he has won two consecutive Mr. Olympia.

During an interview back in 2019, Big Ramy was questioned about the bodybuilding scene in his homeland. He cleared all the doubts regarding the scene of bodybuilding in Egypt. In 2019, he was getting ready for the upcoming Olympia. It was quite a close call for him against Brandon Curry, but he still gave his best. After that Olympia, he was unstoppable.

Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay is an Egyptian IFBB professional bodybuilder. As of now, he is training for the next Mr. Olympia and he isn’t backing off from it till he tastes another victory.

Big Ramy opens up about bodybuilding in Egypt

Born in Baltim, Big Ramy worked as a fisherman before he chose his career as a professional bodybuilder. As he explained in the interview in 2019, it looks like bodybuilding is popular in Egypt.

“You know it’s not a big issue in Egypt because we already had big names in Mr. Olympia before,” Ramy said and continued, “We have big names like Mohamed Makkawy.” It’s not like Ramy is the only professional bodybuilder from Egypt. There were a lot of them before him, and there are still a lot of them around him.

“Bodybuilding is big in Egypt. They have a lot of fans,” Ramy said. Bodybuilding in some countries might not be that popular, but the Egyptian people admire bodybuilding a lot as per Big Ramy.

Ramy has gone through all of the stages. He talks about how his family thought of bodybuilding as a strange sport. But they even got excited when he started taking his first steps toward greatness. He had a fully supportive family who helped him to pursue his career as a bodybuilder.

What’s next for Ramy?

Currently, the reigning Mr. Olympia champion, Big Ramy, is training for the next big stage, which is the 2022 Mr. Olympia.

The 2022 Mr. Olympia will begin on December 15 and end on December 18. He has already started his training for his title a long time ago. As he awaits his third Olympia title.

Despite having high confidence in himself, Ramy isn’t taking it lightly. He knows that whoever shows up on the big stage has the same amount of respect as he does.
