Arnold Schwarzenegger on surgeries
The seven-time Mr. Olympia, bodybuilding legend Arnold’s heart valve, had a genetic flaw that made it difficult for blood to flow through his main artery, the aorta. He has had this issue since his birth. As the actor gained weight and muscle, the problem resulted in aortic stenosis.
Schwarzenegger revealed how he had only a 12 percent chance of survival. Arnold told Graham Bensinger in the show “In Depth.” He stated, “[The surgery] failed, and I started coughing and choking, and not getting any air, and there was fluid going in the lungs.” He added, “Now it gets very dangerous because to do two surgeries within 24 hours like that… First, they tell you there’s a 6 percent chance of failure that you wipe out, and now all of a sudden that doubles. There’s 12%.”
Arnold concluded, “It was a wild situation to be in, but being on the amount of drugs you’re under at that point, you really don’t care. It was an absolute disaster to be in.” Arnold posted on Instagram in March 2021 that he had put on weight while continuing his at-home workout regimen. After a few days, Schwarzenegger shared a picture of himself on a hospital bed. His fans got worried as he revealed his heart surgery.
