Lou Ferrigno is a bodybuilding legend, who popularized the sport. The former IIFB Mr. Universe never won the prestigious Mr. Olympia title but had a long and successful bodybuilding career. Ferrigno rose to popularity through Pumping Iron (1977), however, that was only the beginning. In the 70s, the champion bodybuilder bagged the Incredible Hulk role that truly catapulted his fame.

The former Mr. Universe didn’t let the fame get to him. Ferrigno remained humble and was always available for fans. And Ferrigno took his commitment to fans to a different level in 1994.

Not even a car crash could stop Lou Ferrigno

In an interview for ExRx.com, Lou revealed how he maintained a stable mindset. Ferrigno gave the interviewer the ultimate example. “I’ll give you a perfect example. I mentioned two nights ago, that I drove two hours to do a personal appearance. And I got into a major head-on collision.”, said Lou. While Lou admitted to panicking initially, he calmed himself down. Lou said, “There was a whole bunch of people waiting. There was like 800, 900 people outside”

Lou also said that right after the accident, a bunch of kids came running toward his truck. They all wanted autographs, and while Ferrigno could have easily dismissed them, he thought, “Why should I take it out on these people?” because the accident wasn’t their fault.

So the Hulk actor parked on the side of the road and didn’t cancel his show. “I when on and did the show, then I left. I felt better, because knowing that I was able to move on. If I had this situation where I just “Oh man, ah s**t! I got a car accident. I can’t do the f**kin’ show. I can’t function,” said Lou. While many actors have canceled even bigger events for far less, Lou didn’t want to disappoint his fans. A testament to Lou’s mental resilience.

The reel-life superhero

Lou became pretty famous after playing the Incredible Hulk in the 1977 television show of the same name. Just like a head-on collision wasn’t enough to stop Lou in real life, Lou’s Hulk tossed around tanks and heavy artillery on screen. The iconic bodybuilder worked hard in the gym, eating a strict diet. Unlike every other actor portraying a superhero, Lou didn’t need any bodysuit to look massive.
