In bodybuilding, one of the most important muscle groups for the upper body is the three heads of the deltoid. The three heads are the anterior deltoid, or front part, the lateral deltoid, or middle part, and the posterior deltoid, or the back part of the shoulder. While many movements passively train the anterior deltoid, only specific movements, such as lateral raises or rows train the other two heads. However, bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger invented an ingenious exercise targeting all three heads of the deltoid.
Bodybuilders included the movement, and to this day, the Arnold Press remains a popular exercise for professionals and bodybuilding enthusiasts. Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler recently spoke about the Arnold press after fans asked him for his opinion on the movement. However, he didn’t have a straightforward answer.

On March 17, 2023, the three-time Arnold Classic champion uploaded a YouTube short on the Arnold Press. In the JayCutlerTV video, the former champion explained how the exercise uses wrist rotation to target all three heads of shoulder muscle. However, the 49-year-old who still has monstrous shoulders, revealed he doesn’t include the movement in his workout routine.
Cutler shot the video while standing next to his three Arnold Classic trophies and posters of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Cutler, who has spoken about the seven-time Mr. Olympia before, praised Schwarzenegger for his knowledge. “He’s done a lot with training. The Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding has a lot of great movements in there,” said the former Mr. Olympia.
However, he also said, “That exercise never really did anything in my routine for me,” in the YouTube short. “I kind of have my own standard, you know, dumbbell or barbell press, machine press…” added the veteran bodybuilder. Cutler said everyone adapts to different exercises that work for them, and the Arnold press never provided him with the desired growth. However, the champion bodybuilder urged his fans to try the exercise and not take his word for it.
Does the shoulder press variation have a place in your exercise routine?
According to Jay Cutler, everyone should try the famous shoulder exercise the Austrian Oak invented. “If you want to try to mix up or retune your routine a little bit you know, throw in the Arnold press and see if it fits,” he said.

He recommended it, especially if the shoulder is a stubborn body part for someone. “Shoulders are one of those important body parts. I couldn’t have won three Arnold Classics without having a great, developed shoulder structure,” said the former champ.
