Her father, Sargent Shriver, was a United States Ambassador to France, while her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a public servant. While talking about growing up in a family of politicians, Shriver spoke about the prevalent notion in the political sphere. She said politics is the “only profession that penalized you if you changed your mind and still does.” However, she said that she finds it “troublesome” when someone who is 50, remains “exactly the same as they were at 30.”

The author told Mylett, that she finds it unsettling how some would spend decades without changing. Shriver said she found it difficult to believe that nothing makes an individual “re-evaluate” their life for decades. She then gave her own example. “Life has happened to me… my parents are both dead. I got separated after being with one person for 34 years,” said Shriver.

“My kids are grown up… I’ve achieved certain things in my journalism career,” and hence “I’ve got to be different,” said the 67-year-old. Going through a public divorce with Arnold Schwarzenegger, losing her father to Alzheimer’s, and other harsh realities have made Shriver re-evaluate how she viewed life. So how did Maria Shriver change? During the interview, the mother of four also revealed her beliefs that life has shattered.
