Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is a man of many talents. When he is not squishing Oberyn Martell’s head (Game of Thrones), like the eponymous vegetable at the La Tomatina Festival, he is living a quaint life in the Icelandic mountains (pun intended). At 6’9 tall and 152 kg weight, he hailed the title of the World’s Strongest Man. However, what kind of diet made him reach the apex of his strength? Let’s find out.

Hafþór had difficulties focusing on his studies from a very young age, due to the high levels of energy he possessed, even as a child. He concentrated on outdoor sports and found his calling in Basketball. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make a career out of it for a reason quite contrary to common norms. 

Hafþór Brnsson’s insane diet and training plans

Hafþór said, “I was probably overtraining – I was on the court three times a day“. While it may sound wild, Hafþór’s own intense training and workout were the reason behind his initial hiccups in life. He trained less than usual, in order to win the World’s Strongest Man title in 2018. 

His nutritional intake was always higher than usual, and he had no bars to consuming any and every kind of food. He said, “I basically ate everything. Pizza, Pasta — anything to make myself bigger”. A large body, let alone as large as Hafþór’s, requires an enormous amount of calories to function on a daily basis. And yet, the build is not achieved over a few months or a year. It is a product of many years in the making. 

Hafþór’s love for the gym started after getting injured a couple of times on the Basketball court. With his dreams of making it to a basketball court essentially coming to an end, he focused his attention on the gym. His sole motive behind training in the gym was to build a large body with strength, and that required him to eat as much as he could. However, in recent years, his diet plan took a shift when he decided to be more athletic rather than big.

His daily consumption comprises six meals. He starts his day on a heavy note, with breakfast that includes six eggs, six bacon pieces, and a humongous bowl of oatmeal on top of that. Sometimes he also replaces the bowl of oatmeal with 3 French toasts. 

Keen awareness and knowledge of food help Hafþór’s confidence

It is still a large breakfast in proportion to others, but Hafþór believes it is nothing compared to his previous diet. He said, “With such big proportions, the food needs to digest quickly”, and hence he eats a food item, that may not traditionally be healthy, but goes easily in his stomach and lets him eat more – Rice. He also takes Vitamin pills after his meal.

Hafþór developed his love for playing chess and video games, which he continues to do to date. While many might be skeptical of a heavy diet plan like Hafþór’s, to bear some amount of health concerns and risk their digestive organs. Hafþór is confident in his knowledge of the exact amount of his dietary intake.

Hafþór won the World’s Strongest Man title in 2018 and became only the 3rd Icelandic man to achieve the feat after Jón Páll Sigmarsson and Magnús Ver Magnússon. The competition was held this year in Sacramento, California from May 24-29. British strongman Tom Stoltman won the competition. Who do you think will win the competition next year?
