Steroid use in bodybuilding is a secret that is widely known. Although it was kept under wraps initially, several bodybuilders chose to open up about its necessary usage. In a 1991 interview, former bodybuilding champion and Mr. Universe, Mike Mentzer revealed steroid use is a part of the sport.

Even bodybuilding legend Ronnie Coleman had no problem discussing it, as they believe everyone knows about it. Coleman’s bodybuilding career began all-natural. It took a huge leap after he was introduced to steroids. Mentzer shared similar insights, its effects, and mistaken notions surrounding its usage.

Steroid usage is a necessary evil in the bodybuilding world

Steroid use safety is a constant topic of discussion, especially in the bodybuilding world. In an old interview, Mentzer acknowledged his familiarity with many top bodybuilders who have been training and taking steroids for decades. Furthermore, he noted that they have healthy families. The inquisitive host asked Mike whether it was necessary to opt for them to compete on an international level with Mr. Olympia.

It is widely accepted that one cannot develop a competition-worthy physique without taking steroids. The bodybuilding champ said, “If you want to compete on even the local, national, international or professional level, without a doubt, steroids are a part of it.”

Moreover, he pointed out the most talked about “deleterious effects of steroids” as affecting fertility or the brain per se. Describing it as a “mistaken notion” that has never been proved, he said, “that are possibly affected are proper liver function, kidney, and so forth glandular functions.” 

Ronnie Coleman didn’t have a reason to hide it 

The 8x Mr. Olympia revealed on The Joe Rogan Experience using steroids is helpful, but he wouldn’t give all the credit to them for his size and conditioning. Coleman said that revealing its usage didn’t bother him as “People aren’t stupid.” He competed all-natural for six years of his career. Moreover, he was tired of ranking behind despite putting in vigorous efforts. He realized that his competitors had an advantage, “so I was like, ‘Let’s make this equal.’”

From 1998 until 2005, Coleman went on to win eight straight championships. The King adhered to a strict regimen of exercise and diet besides using steroids. In addition to having a naturally impressive body, steroids allowed him to get much more shredded and project a competitive image.
