Every year, the Olympia weekend is the biggest and most awaited bodybuilding contest. In December 2022, Mr. Olympia witnessed the biggest plot twist when 2x reigning champion, Mamdouh Elssbiay aka Big Ramy, not only lost his crown but also fell to the fifth spot. The results were shocking, as a major fraction of the bodybuilding community expected Ramy to take home his third trophy. Many believed that Ramy just didn’t perform well that day. However, veterans of the industry, like Samir Bannout, believe that Ramy losing the contest was because of something more than just one bad performance.

Ahead of the upcoming 2023 Arnold Classic, the old stagers of the bodybuilding world sat down to evaluate the frontrunners of the Men’s Open Division. When Ramy’s name came up, they talked about how difficult it could be for him to claim the title, and how his health could prove to be one of the biggest obstacles.

On January 26, Old School Labs posted the 30th episode of their podcast, “The Muscle Maturity.” In this episode, experts Samir Bannout, John Hansen, and Nick Trigili, sat down to discuss the current stories and upcoming events in the bodybuilding community. While talking about Big Ramy, Bannout mentioned that he would love to see Ramy win again one day. However, the chances of that happening are slim considering Ramy’s health issue. “Health is wealth. Let’s hope he’s healthy and he’s still young enough. Hopefully, he can redeem himself,” said Bannout.

Ever since the competition, Ramy’s nerves have been under much scrutiny. On that note, Bannout added, “If there’s no major nerve damage, he’ll still be good for a couple more years. But if it’s a nerve situation, and we already said that: it’s impossible to revive a nerve. It’s nearly impossible. I know that for a fact.”

Additionally, Bannout recalled his own experience with nerve damage. The 67-year-old said, “Look at me, I lost my Brachialis because someone popped my neck and messed up my C-5 and C-6 I had a bone fusion here. I did everything I could to try to revive it and I couldn’t.” As per reports, Big Ramy is currently undergoing stem treatment to battle his health issues.

During the 2022 Mr. Olympia contest, many pointed out that Big Ramy was facing difficulty while posing. It is believed that his back and shoulder issues kept him away from the trophy this time. After losing at the Olympia, Ramy is now gearing up to prepare for the upcoming Arnold Classic. To do so he has taken it upon himself to sort out his health issues.

Dr. Akhan had prescribed stem cell treatment to Ramy to help his body regenerate and recover. Recently, Big Ramy traveled to Dubai to visit a Bioscience Institute to seek treatment. Now Ramy seems to be physically fit to prepare for the upcoming event.
