Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates competed and dominated bodybuilding for six years, from 1992 to 1997. Yates had a tall task in the early 90s, as he had succeeded Lee Haney. Besides winning the Mr. Olympia title eight times, Lee Haney brought the near-perfect mix of muscularity, proportions, and conditioning to the stage. However, Yates lived up to the task. While he won six titles, Yates dawned the era of the mass monster, changing the sport forever. Earlier, the English bodybuilding legend shared a memory from his prime.

Dorian Yates shared a rare image on his Instagram, sharing the history behind the photograph. Yates explained how the picture was significant in more ways than one, including the hairstyle he sported in the picture.

In the picture Yates shared on his Instagram handle, he was hitting a back-double biceps pose. The photo was taken inside a gym, presumably during a workout session. The image shows Yates’s insane back development, arguably his best body part. It also showed off his immaculate mullet. “Here’s a shot from 1991!” the six-time Mr. Olympia wrote in the caption.

Yates explained the significance of the picture. “This was a massive year for me. I won the Night of Champions which then catapulted me to the Olympia stage,” said Yates. 1991 was also the year he faced off against the great, Lee Haney. “I challenged the great Lee Haney for the title!… I didn’t win, but came second place,” wrote the bodybuilder from England.

However, Yates revealed competing against Haney made him feel “that the next year would be the year I win.” In 1992, Yates captured and defended the Mr. Olympia title five times. The image was also significant to Yates for the hairstyle. “1991 was also the year of the mullet, quite possibly the best hairstyle in professional bodybuilding,” joked Yates adding a wink emoji.

Interestingly, 1992 was the first time Ronnie Coleman competed at Mr. Olympia. While the six-time Mr. Olympia might have joked about his mullet, the fans expanded on it in the comments.

The fans carried the mullet joke forward

Popular in the 80s, the mullet never returned and has become the center of all hairstyle jokes in pop culture. The bodybuilding legend’s fans couldn’t help but crack some jokes:

“The mullet= +1 on the scoresheet.”

“You won the muscularity and hair style rounds against Lee Haney.”
