For most Americans, the day doesn’t start unless they drink their first mug of coffee. It’s the same for many other parts of the world. Thanks to the fast-paced life that beverages fully loaded with caffeine have become essential to most adults. In parts of the world where coffee is less popular, another caffeinated drink, tea, dominates. While die-hard coffee and tea lovers would go to war over their drink of choice, few drink both on any given day. However, consuming both drinks, ie., tea and coffee, might have some startling health benefits, according to a study quoted by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Arnold’s Pump Club, the bodybuilding legend talked about dieting. This week instead of busting a popular food myth or highlighting healthy diet changes, the seven-time Mr. Olympia talked about caffeinated beverages. “Food gets all the focus on diet plans,” wrote the bodybuilding champion before quoting a study combining tea and coffee consumption.

“A couple of beverages are building an impressive resume for helping with disease prevention,” wrote the legendary bodybuilder. The Austrian Oak revealed that drinking tea and coffee helps prevent afflictions like stroke and dementia. The former Mr. Universe highlighted a massive study and explained the health benefits it unearthed.
“Drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee and 2 to 3 cups of tea per day was associated with a 32 percent lower risk of stroke and a 28 percent lower risk of dementia,” revealed Schwarzenegger in his newsletter. The 75-year-old said doing so might result in frequent bathroom breaks, but it’s a con that can’t outweigh the pros.
A 32 and 28 percent reduction in stroke and dementia, compared to those who didn’t drink tea and coffee, was a huge result. Schwarzenegger also revealed that the study was massive, as 360,000 adults participated in it over a 12-year period. However, the fitness icon didn’t forget to highlight the variables involved in the study.
Arnold Schwarzenegger also highlighted the variables
A single study isn’t enough to form a conclusive answer, no matter how extensive it is. However, many times people take a single study as gospel. Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t want his readers to think that. “Because it was an observational study, we can’t claim cause and effect, as other variables inevitably influence health outcomes,” he wrote.

Despite this, other studies have found coffee and tea to contain polyphenols. Schwarzenegger wrote that polyphenols “have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” that can help fight “free radicals,” causing disease. While the study included people who drink decaf coffee and tea, “How strong the effect is compared to caffeinated versions cannot be determined,” wrote Schwarzenegger.
